The knife cuts through her creamy skin like butter, and blood begins pouring down her chest in a thick stream. Some of it sprays over my chin and neck, warm and fucking delicious.

I strike her breast and watch the blade sink to the hilt. Then I stagger back, my wide eyes glued to the knife protruding from her chest as she slides down the wall, a streak of red left behind.

Adam sobs. It strikes me as weird. I’ve never seen him cry, and now he struggles to breathe through his blinding panic.

I raise my hand and suck the blood off my fingers, one by one.

Then it happens.

A strange sensation starts in the pit of my stomach and spreads throughout my body. I feel sick, feverish. My incisors ache and throb.

Zach tips my head back and drags his thumb over my teeth. “The transition has begun.” He sounds excited. Looking over at Adam, he says conversationally, “If Maddy had finished reading the article about the myth, she would’ve found out that three masked men come to this cabin every year because the legend says the Princess of Darkness will arrive here on her eighteenth birthday.”

My hands are in my hair, tugging and tearing, while an intense ache blooms at my shoulders.

“I’m sorry, beautiful. It will be over soon.” Then he continues with his ridiculous story. “Do you know what you are? You’re a demon, Layla. A demon, hidden in the human world to keep you safe until your powers manifest. You’re not just any demon though—you’re the devil’s daughter. The rightful successor to his throne.”

“You’re fucking insane!” Adam growls behind me. “You need to be locked up in a fucking mental hospital somewhere.”

Zach ignores him, his fingers on my jaw coaxing me to turn and look at him.

“The transition starts when she kills. Think of it like sowing a seed. It’s not complete yet. First, you must quench your thirst, that for sin and that for nourishment.”

There’s movement in the room, the sound of heavy feet on the floor. Strong hands stroking over my back, my shoulders.

Zach steps back.

The three masked men close in around me, their hands roaming, grabbing.

“In my world,” Zach says, hidden from view by the broad chest in front of me, “sex infuses you with power. For someone like you, Layla—a true princess—power is a sweet, tempting drug. It’s food. You need it to survive.”

My boobs are squeezed, and my nipples are tweaked.
